Once atop your camel, your broome tour guide will lead you for a walk along Cable Beach, sharing stories and interesting facts about the Broome region. Staircase to the Moon

A truly spectacular natural phenomenon, photos simply do no justice – you have to witness Staircase to the Moon for yourself. Only occurring for 2-3 days a month between March and October, Staircase to the Moon results as a full moon rises over the tidal flats at Roebuck Bay, creating the illusion of – as the name suggests – a staircase leading to the moon.

Largely described as the best viewing point for Staircase to the Moon is Town Beach, but the full-moon event at The Mangrove Hotel Resort is always popular, and another great place to watch the Staircase.

Staircase to the Moon markets take place at Town Beach, so make sure you pay a visit to see local entertainers, buy handmade products and sample international cuisine.

Dinosaur Footprints

Step back in time to the Cretaceous period, and visit the tracks of up to seven different dinosaur species. The kids (and adults alike!) will be delighted to see dinosaur footprints that have been around for up to 130 million years.

The prints can be found scattered around Roebuck Bay and Gantheaume Point, and can be reached on foot depending on the tides.

Flying Boat Wrecks

At very low tide at Town Beach, it’s possible to spot the wrecks of Catalina and Dornier flying boats which were attacked and brought down during WWII. At low tide, six wrecks are visible, the rest submerged in deep water.

It’s possible to reach the wrecks on foot during low tide. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the wrecks, and remember to take care as it is a Heritage listed site and an important part of Australian aviation history. The mud can be pretty sticky, so make sure you wear appropriate footwear!

Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park

With some of the largest crocodiles on display in Australia, visit Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park to see the big reptiles up close. Witness croc feeding every day, and learn about the animals the late Malcolm Douglas dedicated his life to. Other reptiles, birds and animals such as dingoes and kangaroos can be found here, and the kids will love the chance to hold a baby crocodile. Located only 15 minutes outside of Broome, this is a must-see on your Broome adventure.

See a film at Sun Pictures

Sun Pictures is the oldest operating open air picture theatre in the world. Deck chairs invite you to relax beneath the stars, enjoying a movie with the family. The first movie here was shown in 1906, so this building (though restored over time) is steeped in history and nostalgia. It maintains a ‘rustic’ sort of vibe, with character weathered tin roofs giving you an idea of how it might have felt to see a film here in the early twentieth century.

Broome Courthouse Markets

In the beautiful, heritage listed gardens at Broome Courthouse are popular markets, hosting up to 115 stalls at its busiest during the Dry Season. Running every Saturday year-round, as well as Sunday’s from April-October, you are sure to find something here to delight you and each member of your family. With locally handmade clothing, homewares, food, refreshments, and local entertainment, there is something for everyone. First started over 25 years ago, the Courthouse Markets are a popular tourist attraction for those wanting to get a look at all the creative wares on offer.

Visit Matso’s Brewery

Visit the home of iconic Matso’s Ginger Beer. With an award-winning restaurant, Matso’s Brewery boasts views over Roebuck Bay and is a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike. A large outdoor area provides heaps of seating, and they are very family-friendly. Ask the wonderful staff for their recommendations on which wine or beer to pair with your meal!
