Sun Pictures Cinema
Steeped in history, the Sun Pictures Cinema is the world’s oldest picture gardens still in operation. Visit during the day to appreciate the old architecture and history of the place, or visit in the evening so the whole family can soak up the experience of watching a movie beneath the stars. With a unique twist from the usual movie theatre, the Sun Pictures will be an experience you and the kids won’t forget!
Staircase to the Moon at Town Beach
For a few nights of the month between March and November a natural phenomenon occurs across the exposed tidal flats at Roebuck Bay. As the moon rises, you can witness a stunning staircase illusion occurring before your eyes. The times and dates for Staircase to the Moon are listed online, and it’s an experience that needs to be seen to be believed.
Bring the family down to Town Beach, as it’s a great place from which to experience Staircase to the Moon. Make sure you check out the Moon Markets, and enjoy some culinary delights and locally made wares.
Cable Beach
Take the kids down to Cable Beach for a paddle or a swim. The picturesque white sand and turquoise water offer an ideal backdrop for family photos, and it’s the perfect spot for a sandcastle building contest. Once you’ve all had a dip, why not walk a few metres from the sand and have some lunch and ice creams.
If you want warm, dry days and typical holiday/swimming weather when you’re visiting Broome, the dry season is the best time to visit (the dry season is from May to October, the wet season from November to April). In addition, Cable Beach has lifeguards on duty during the dry season. With that being said – there is no ‘wrong time’ to visit Broome! Make sure Cable Beach is on your to-see list whenever you visit.
The world-famous camel rides along Cable Beach are a must. Kids younger than 4 can sit on the lap of a parent so the whole family can enjoy the experience of plodding along Cable Beach on the back of a camel as the sun sets.
Dinosaur Footprints
A family trip to Broome would not be complete without seeing some of the dinosaur footprints scattered along the coast of the Dampier Peninsula. The kids will be delighted with the chance to follow in the footsteps of real dinosaurs! And it’s a great chance for the children to learn about the different types of dinosaurs that once roamed Western Australia.
The prints date back some 130 million years and are a phenomenal sight to behold. One of the best places to see the prints is at Gantheaume Point, but make sure you visit at low tide under 2m. Ensure the kids take great care, as the rocks can be slippery. There are moulds of the footprints in an easier to reach location for the little ones, and other prints are visible at Cable Beach, Entrance Point and Reddell Beach during low tide.
